WINDSURF: RS:X EUROPEAN WINDSURFING TEAM RACING CHAMPIONSHIPS
POLAND BEATS GREECE 2-0 IN THE FINAL
ITALY 3RD, FRANCE 4TH AND NEW ZELAND 5TH
The pundits called Poland to win the 2nd Edition of the RS:X European
Windsurfing Team Racing Championships taking place at the World Festival
On The Beach in Mondello, Sicily.
They were right.
Under a bright blue autumn sky with a sea breeze, Team Poland [Wojcik,
Grodzicki and Malgorzata Bialecka] won gold in the finals beating Team
Greece [Byron Kokalanis & Geli Skarlatou] 3-1.
Byron (4th in the 2009 RSX Worlds in Weymouth) was bitterly disappointed
but there is no disputing the supremacy of the Polish Team. After a
clean sweep in the round-robin stage in which they cruised through 9-0
Wojcik said this after taking the finals...
"We are in seventh heaven. We came to Mondello to win and we did just
that. It wasn´t easy. Byron and Geli pushed us hard. The final was in
doubt until the last minute thanks to the excellent form of the Greek
Team. The RS:X European Windsurfing Team Racing Gold is the best way for
us to close out our 2009 racing season" .
In the battle to decide who would take 3rd, Team Italy beat Team France
2-0. Team Italy [Laura Linares, Federico Esposito,Riccardo Belli e
Manfredi Misuraca) were pleased with their result...
We are happy anyway" commented Linares "This event always gives good
emotions. We were not able to race for the first place but this bronze
medal gives us great satisfaction"
After beating Poland 2 by 2-0, Team New Zealand [Jon Paul Tobin, Antonio
Cozzolino and Jazmine Lynch] took 5th place. Seventh went to Italia 2 [Fabian
Heidegger, Marcantonio Baglione, Dario Pasta e Annie Nuccio] who took
Team Hungary [Istvan Erdelyi, Miklos Kort Velyesi and Sara Cholnoky] 2
to 0.
The RS:X EuropeanTeam Racing Championship is a high level event in which
32 men and women took part including 6 of the top 10 off the ISAF World
Ranking List and 20 from the top 50. It just goes to show that there is
more high level sport to be had on a windsurf board than course racing.
