The beach steals the scene
After 20 years of success, the World Festival on the Beach will be back
in Mondello from the 15th to the 21st of May to celebrate its 21st
edition of sport, sea, music and entertainment, organised by the Albaria
Windsurfing Club who two decades ago introduced this adventure: an event
that brings sport and culture together and at the same time bringing out
the best of the environment, promoting Sicily’s tourism internationally.
The organisers guided by the Albaria are all ready at work to host all
the events that will transform Mondello into a unique village of its
kind, the centre of the whole event.
The Festival always has lots of surprises, this year the European
Windsurf Championships will take place and the weighing in procedure
will take place on the 15th of May, there will be a sailing race (match
race and fleet races), and Beach Volley matches. Lots of sports
champions, who like every year, find each other at the Festival to
participate in the different competitions programmed and to breath in
the atmosphere that has made it an event one of its kind. This year for
the first time there will be Golf on the Beach (Driving Contest), a
striking variation of the golf theme that will see the beach as its
green. There will also be surfing, kite surfing, skydiving acts, bunjee
- jumping and the photo contest, a traditional contest open to all who
are keen. Lots of surprises that guarantee this holiday village to be
one of its kind.
In the Valdesi square and along the beach front this village will be
created, with plenty of room to walk around in amongst the well kept
gardens, this area will be closed to traffic and will be used only by
pedestrians. Looking out towards the sea the village becomes unique with
its beach volley stage, the windsurf races, people walking around and
the beach with its beautiful sea water. This brings together an oasis
inside an oasis, made especially to value at its best its magnificent
settings, and to allow the thousands of people who rather than
spectators are the real protagonists of this magical synthesis of
nature, sport, the sea and performances.
There are no tickets to pay, no entrance tickets to show and no queues
to line up in. There is enough space for pavilions, stalls, places to
rest and make the most of the sports and musical activities, with only
one thing in mind, making sure that the athletes, artists and spectators
feel welcome and well.
Also this year there will be an Auditorium set up beside the beach which
is one of its kind: a big stage with coloured sails as its background,
this will be the centre of the evening performances, in particular the
New Jazz Festival on the Beach (17th – 20th) which has reached it’s 5th
edition and has saw in these five years international stars transforming
Mondello to an international audience.
The musical events are an all time factor to the World Festival on the
Beach, the music represents an excellent layout at the event. There is
music for all tastes: from the Symphony on the Beach – an hour of
cultured music, for those who know about this music and those who don’t,
can attend this amazing show – to the pop, rock and disco music.
The World Festival on the Beach has been organised along with the town
Council for more than ten years and brought together with the help from
the Sicilian Regional Council, the local tourism authorities who have
the fourth year running inserted the event in the local tourism calendar
as an event that brings more tourism to the island.
